Dr. ...Who?

These guys are little posters i made for my friend who is hosting the Cyberkaraoke Britrock party at  the upcoming Chicago Tardis, an annual Dr.Who convention. i thought it would be fun to recreate some iconic album covers from a few of my favorite bands, and tie them into the Dr. Who thing. The top one is suppose to be the album cover of The Jam's in The City, and if you dont know who they are I highly recommend them. The second one is probably more recognizable. its a spoof of The Cure's Boys Don't Cry single (remix i think). i used to have this poster on my wall and its pretty much what i think of when i think of The Cure. I put in a Dalek because they are this alien race devoid of every emotion except hate which worked perfect with the title, plus a Dalek with Robert Smith hair is just plain funny.

This was a quick and fun illustration i did as a cover for my creative writing class final. it was basically a final collection of our best work that term revised and polished up all shiny. One of my stories was a retelling of the three little pigs. A kinda hard boiled crime novel version. I thought the scribbled look really captured the feel of it. straight and to the point this one is.

come get some!

Was thinking of using this piece as a cover for my portfolio book. Had an earlier version with very bright colors and while i dug it i just didn't really really like, not in my heart of hearts. this one is much more up my alley. was goin for a left in the basement and saved from a flood kinda look with all that grime and junk. the idea itself was just me thinking ...if I Could choose how i go out, how would i go?

This was a commissioned piece that was a lot of fun to work on. the client was very specific with what he wanted , which made my job just that much easier. the actual piece is 2x3 feet and printed on canvas. The car was a bit of a challenge to pull off as they are the one thing i avoid drawing whenever possible. was really going for a loony toons feel for the whole thing and i think i got it. very happy with how this one came out.

Zombies, zombies, zombies!

This was a fun project that i was commissioned to work on for my friends band, Suture Self. Been a while since i went all out in horror mode so this was a cool little visit to what got me drawing in the first place. Making sure i got the bands likeness was a challenge but not nearly as bad as i thought it would be. I made the zombies sort of old comic book horror, with the ridged brow and puckered up mouths. was going for gruesome without being overly gory. the bricks, ..the bricks were a pain.
Here is a closer look at the band members and some of the detail. the actual picture is 11x18. yeah those are his actual tattoos. he was very specific.

she's gotta bone to pick!

This is an older drawing i did for a class project with my trusty round Winsor and Newton brush. Im a huge fan of old horror comics and i must have been trying to ape Wrightson here. there is something very soothing about making lots of little lines with a brush. its almost like meditation. currently i'm working on a bunch of commission work so hopefully i'll be able to post some of that stuff up soon but in the meantime, enjoy this here dead guy and weird gal who thinks its fun to hide in peoples ribcages.

ooohhhh ...FACED!

Some more random head sketches from my "bored in school lobby" pile. as you can see i like to use colored pencils to rough em out before commiting to any lines. I love scribbling and goin nuts with the colored pencil first. its just fun.

the small faces

Been a very very long time since i last posted. my computer has been down for the last few months and the last school term hadn't left me with a lot of free time. The only thing Ive really had time for lately has been doodling in between classes. so while i dont have anything really polished up to show you, i do have a pile of 2 minute sketches. scanning stuff is boring though, so im only gonna post a small chunk, hopefully every day for the next week or so. fingers crossed by then my computer will be up and running, ...or, it will be in a busted up pile outside, looking longingly in through my window at me and my brand new Mac. Anyway, todays chunk of doodles are some floating heads. the creepy looking old man in the lower left is my favorite. He is NOT amused.

Over winter break my buddy Brandon Chase asked me to draw up an idea he had for his band Sutureself. The idea was a DNA strand turning into the letter S at the top. This was the perfect break I needed from all the cute cartoons I've been at lately, so I immediately agreed to it. right away I knew I wanted the S to look like it was sharp and dangerous so I tried to give the impression of teeth being formed as the strand unraveled. I had no clue what to do with the shading or coloring so I went back to him and asked about his preferences. As soon as he told me it was just gonna be a black and white vector image I knew what I wanted to do. ...I wanted to beat the crap outta it. So I started to add cracks and knock out little chunks and cause some erosion.
Once the bottom of the DNA strand crumbled away from all the abuse, the design was done, and I sent it off to my buddy.
He then turned it into a vector image and did this cool negative advert with it which I actually dig more than my version. Its always fun working in collaboration with someone else because of these cool little surprises. The best part of collaboration though is of course not being able to slack off and half ass it.

vampire a go go

Blaaaargh!! dont really know why i did this today. ive just been feeling kinda sucky lately. Ha! get it? ...because it's a vampire. any way ive been trying to add more texture to my drawings lately to balance out the flatness that i seem to enjoy. I feel like this guy runs around with his cape up makin airplane noises.

So here's another drawing of a cute girl doing a pretty mundane task, and quite possibly the most sexist drawing i've ever done. Because this is what girls do right? they stand around gabbing on the phone while baking. ..and wear a bunch of pink.
